Mobile Fees To Be Capped For Use Abroad
Monday, June 4th, 2007There is a new capping deal that is being made between European countries to cut the cost of using a mobile abroad. The plan is to cap the mobile abroad to a maximum of 34p per minute. Because of the high cost of using a mobile in foreign countries, the European Union member states and members of the European Parliament have come to an agreement to reduce the cost of using a mobile abroad.
The agreement between the European Union members states and the members of the European Parliament would see a maximum cost of 34p for calling home from an EU country and 17p for receiving calls. It is expected that the MEP’s are to vote on the proposal next week and if it is approved the agreement will be in effect at the start of June.
The cost of making a call abroad, which is known as roaming, has been a major complaint from many mobile users for a long time. Some mobile users have been charged up to £1 per minute to make calls or to receive calls. The policy to cap the rate was made after the mobile companies failed to bring down the price of calls after the European Parliament told mobile networks to cut the cost of calls. Originally a cap of 28p for making a call was made by the MEP’s, with a 10p cap for receiving a call. However many networks were unable to fall in line with the guidelines and therefore the regulation of a 34p cap was then introduced. Many mobile users hope that the proposal will pass and hopefully put a halt on the high charges that networks charge for mobile usage abroad.
This news will relieve travellers who have returned from holiday to find a mountainous mobile bill and been forced to take out a pay day loan to cover the cost until they are in funds again.
